In the novel The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, we follow the story of Arthur Dent. Arthur is the hapless earthling that finds himself on a wild journey throughout the universe. When traveling the universe it is important to remember where you come from. Not only to remember who you are, but the foundations that built and molded the person you are today. A proud intergalactic traveler should always be ready and willing to regale citizens of other planets with the traditions and various cultures of Earth. Maybe one day you will cross paths with someone who is unfamiliar with the intricacies of the Earthly cuisine, the “Turducken;” Or perhaps you find yourself describing the art of the all-important “selfie”.
We should be proud of our culture and willing to accept others. Everyone comes from a different background, even here on Earth. Those different backgrounds are what makes meeting new people so exciting.
Recently, I have been tasked with building a website to represent the country of Switzerland. I have always wanted to visit Switzerland for the beautiful landscape and historic castles. But after researching the cultures found around Central Europe, I am shocked at how similar some of our customs are here in North America. Of course, there are plenty of differences as well. Hopefully, one day I will be able to visit Switzerland and perhaps meet someone who will be able to share some of his/her culture with me.
